Never ever use a ice pick or any tools to defrost these. So care needs to be taken with those in order to not puncture the coolant lines.there will be a label somewhere that says. If it's older then back then a number of dangerous coolants were used like ammonia or sulphur dioxide. If it's really from the 50's then all is well. Make sure you read what coolant is actually in it. If you're say- in a major metro like me around the SF Bay Area, well if it looks good and works, it can be as high as 500 bucks. If you're somewhere like the Midwest then expect a lot less. Value is going to be very dependent on where you live. That and the gaskets, which can be replaced. What usually goes wrong is the wiring, which will often become brittle, especially around the warm compressor. But if there is/was a leak then the fridge is basically junk and worthless because the cost to retrofit would be prohibitive. So as long as there's no leaks in the coolant loop then all is well and these things will generally go forever and ever. These all run on R12, which hasn't been sold in 20 years and is totally incompatible with any other modern coolant. I have 2 late 40's, early 50's fridges and one freezer. Also, if it still has all its shelves and drawers, that's a definite plus. The new owner will likely need to replace the door gasket if it hasn't been done recently.
